Earth Systems (Grade 2, Grade 4)

MATERIALS NEEDED

None!

Instructions

  1. Review the following, using Healthy Trout Habitats for guidance.
    A.
What do all animals, including native trout, need to live? Water, food, shelter, space.
    B. Where do native trout, like the Athabasca rainbow trout, get these needs from? They prefer streams (water, shelter, space) and (as carnivores) eat aquatic insects (mainly small shrimp), leeches, snails, other fish, and fish eggs.

  2. Have participants stand up and space themselves out.

  3. Demonstrate the actions for each of the 4 basic needs.
    A.
Food – holding their hands up to their mouth and munching
    B.
Water – holding their hands in a cup shape and slurping
    C. Shelter – make a roof over their head with their hands
    D. Space – spread out their arms and turn in a circle once

  4. This game is a version of Simon Says. When Nature says an action, the participants should do it.
    A.
When Nature Says food – do the action *eating food*
    B. When Nature Says water – do the action *drinking water*
    C. When Nature Says shelter – do the action *roof over head*
    D. When Nature Says space – do the action *arms out, turn in a circle*

  5. If Nature does not say – do not do the action (i.e. if the instructor just says “Water” but not “Nature says water”). If a participant does an action at the wrong time, they are out and need to sit down. Alternatively, you can make this a team game by continuing the game until everyone does the correct action at the same time. When someone makes a mistake, tell them to keep trying! If the group needs a challenge, speed up the game and see how fast they can go and still do it correctly!
