Our Commitment to Creating Welcoming and Inclusive Spaces

Here at CPAWS Southern Alberta, we believe that EVERYONE can benefit from nature and live in reciprocity with our surrounding environment.

People of all ages, abilities, genders, ethnicities, racial identities, religions, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic classes have a right to connect to nature. All identities are welcome at CPAWS Southern Alberta — whether that's through participating in an education experience, becoming a youth steward, volunteering with us, or taking action through our conservation campaigns.

We want to help you learn about and enjoy all the gifts that nature has to offer to you. We want to support your personal conservation journey to help you give back to nature. We know that it's vital to our mission:

If we want to protect Alberta’s land and waters, we need to see inclusive conservation efforts.

We would like to express gratitude to Out to Play for the inspiration and teachings that led to the creation of our CPAWS Southern Alberta Inclusive Action commitments.

Indigenous Peoples are welcome.

We acknowledge that parks and protected areas in Canada were created by colonial institutions and, in their creation, often evicted and excluded Indigenous Peoples and banned traditional hunting, ceremonies, and land-based practices. Indeed, ‘wilderness’ is a Westernized concept that separates people from land and goes against Indigenous cultures and values. Colonization, residential schools, and cultural genocide have consequences, which continue to cause barriers for Indigenous Peoples today.

We strive to remove barriers by providing free education and stewardship experiences for Indigenous youth, visiting Indigenous schools, working directly with Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and incorporating culturally relevant teachings into our programs.

CPAWS Southern Alberta is committed to taking reconciliation action through our conservation and engagement initiatives. Our outdoor education experiences include living, personalized land acknowledgements that engage participants in gratitude for nature and acknowledgement of the traditional lands we are learning on. We strive to bring Indigenous voices into our programs through videos, voice clips, language, stories, and guest speakers. Any story, teaching, or activity we share has been gifted to us for sharing by an Indigenous teacher.

People of Colour and Black People are welcome.

We acknowledge that People of Colour, Black, and Indigenous (BIPOC) people experience racism and exclusion in the outdoors.

We know that BIPOC communities are under-represented in outdoor recreation and conservation. CPAWS actively partners with organizations that work to support equity-deserving groups such as the Multicultural Trail Network to create more outdoor opportunities for BIPOC communities. We strive to ensure that our program and communication media represent a diversity of races and ethnicities.

Our staff participates in ongoing decolonization and anti-racism training. We are committed to learning and growing from our mistakes.

2SLGBTQIA+ people are welcome.

We will use your chosen names and pronouns and be thoughtful about how genders are represented in our teachings. We work to ensure that our program and communication media represent a diversity of gender identities. We strive to inform volunteers if event locations have all-gender bathrooms or not. Our education staff will not separate groups into boys and girls. We don’t need to know anyone’s sex or gender identity to offer these safer options; we do this for all people.

CPAWS Southern Alberta is proud to partner with Skipping Stone to offer opportunities for trans and gender diverse folks to enjoy nature in a safe and affirming way.

People of all abilities are welcome.

We recognize there are unique barriers to accessing the outdoors for people with physical and/or developmental disabilities.  We are pleased to work with you to accommodate your groups' needs. We can modify locations, routes, pace, activities, and more to ensure everyone has the opportunity to join our experiences in a safe, inclusive, and fun manner.

CPAWS Southern Alberta is proud to partner with community groups like the Developmental Disabilities Resource Centre (DDRC) and AdaptABLE Outdoors to increase access to nature connection. We were humbled in 2023 to receive an Inclusion Award for our commitment to outdoor accessibility from the DDRC as part of their Everybody Belongs initiative.

People of all experiences are welcome.

Whether you are new to outdoor recreation or are an avid outdoor explorer, we want to connect with you! We recognize that some folks — regardless of age — may not have had the opportunity or desire to step off the pavement in a local park or leave the city for a nature immersion experience. We can modify locations, routes, pace, activities, and more to ensure everyone has the opportunity to join our experiences in a safe, inclusive, and fun manner. Our staff are understanding of all levels of experience and will support you and your group in connecting to nature in a way that is comfortable.

People of all Socio-economic Statuses are welcome.

Everyone has a right to connect with and steward nature, regardless of their financial situation. CPAWS is committed to fundraising to reduce financial barriers for people engaging with us. This looks like offering subsidized and free education and youth stewardship experiences; bringing our education experiences to communities at local schools, community centres, or green areas; having additional outdoor gear on hand; offering transit-accessible volunteer opportunities; and more.

Children who are adopted, or in care, are welcome.

We acknowledge the many ways children are living in our communities. Our staff strive to use language likeyour caregivers” andyour trusted adults” rather than “your parents” or “your mum and dad. We take an inclusive view on who is “family.

What can we do to support
you being here?

We are always open to learning, growing, and partnering with others so that we may build bridges to nature connection, environmental education, and conservation. Please reach out to us at education@cpaws.org if you would like to discuss how we can increase inclusion and accessibility for you or your group.

We’re committed to always learning

The CPAWS Southern Alberta team welcomes your feedback. We know we make mistakes. Please let us know. We’ll reflect on your feedback. We want to keep growing and learning.
