Fabulous Forests

See - and be - the forest for the trees

Straight-up, trees are impossibly cool. Healthy forests connect wildlife, support watersheds, fight against climate change, and provide home to an endless variety of life – including us! Explore Alberta’s tree species and investigate the struggles and successes they face in our own backyard and beyond. Begin with tree biology and branch out into deeper discoveries of how forests change and why they matter province- and planet-wide!

Walk among the giants and experience their important role amongst various other plants in the forest ecosystem. Students will participate in hands-on identification as well as other ‘tree top’-ical activities and games.

What teachers & students are saying

  • “Clever is the word I’d use to describe CPAWS environmental education. I loved how the classroom sessions used hands-on inquiry and everyday artifacts to deliver its impactful, ecological messages. By allowing students to place themselves in the hooves and claws of the forest, this program inspired them to truly understand how much we, as humans, impact our natural world AND how much our incredible natural world impacts us. Fun challenges and playful symbolism combined to teach an overall lesson of ‘ecological empathy’, and I am thrilled!”

    - Liesl Leishman, Grade 6 Teacher, Livingstone School, Lundbreck, AB
  • “I learned and remembered so much about trees and grass and animals with CPAWS because it was fun and outdoors and important and inspiring! Nature is kind and awesome. And my generation needs to know that, because we’re the ones that are going to save it.”

    – Grade 6 Student, RancheView School, Cochrane, AB
  • “Thank you for leading us. I learned about forests and trees and seeing different kinds of trees was new for me. As a new Canadian it was very nice to experience nature in the park.”

    – Calgary Catholic Immigration Society youth participant
