Why Grasslands?

Hello heartlands, we're home!

Around the world, grasslands are known by many names: prairie, savanna, veldt, meadow. CPAWS Southern Alberta believes ‘heartlands’ says it all. Once our Why Grasslands? experience has introduced you to the vibrant pulse of life in this often-overlooked wilderness, you too will know the connective sense of place that feeds CPAWS’ grasslands affection and protection.

Fantastical creatures – from swift fox to burrowing owl – will weave a web of connectivity as deep as the grasslands’ fescue-rooted soil. Whether you’re joining us in person, on-line, or outside on the land we will bring you inquiry, games, and hands-on activities and provide everyone with a learning journey brimming with awe, wonder, and welcome.

What participants are saying

  • First of all, thank you so much for coming over and talking about our grasslands environment and how to be more connected with our nature. It was very interactive, and fun. Also, it was great to see that our participants were very engaged and interested in doing some "local prairie hiking" with their little ones.

    - Andrea Beaza, Newcomer Connections Coordinator, Rockyview Parent Link Centre
  • "I liked all the different kinds of activities and how [the experience] connects with nature and the history of Calgary. [It was} a great learning experience, and we are excited to have another walk with CPAWS in the future"

    - Isha Mishra, Northwest YMCA Achievement Program Coordinator, YMCA Calgary
  • “CPAWS Southern Alberta has adapted their well-established education programs specifically to our clientele’s diverse capabilities, interests and sensitivities; making them fun, interactive and universally inclusive."

"Programs ranging from winter walks in Cochrane to virtual, nature emersion experiences have been very well received and attended by newcomers keen to learn as much as they can about safe recreational practices, environmental stewardship and the sheer abundance of outdoor opportunities awaiting their passion, participation and support.
