Noticing: Building Observational Capacity by Drawing Native Plants along the Oldman River

CPAWS Southern Alberta and the Galt Museum are delighted to present an outdoor drawing workshop by the one and only Geneva Haley of Pasture Tattoo and Pasture Land Illustration.

Date: July 17, 2026
Time: 1PM
Location: Fort Whoop-up | 200 Indian Battle Rd S, Lethbridge, AB

This workshop introduces a series of observation exercises designed to help participants slow down and look closely at the prairie landscape.

Rather than focusing on drawing skill or finished artwork, this workshop uses drawing as a tool for attention. Participants will practice noticing patterns, movement, and relationships along the Oldman River.

Learning to notice is one of the most accessible ways we can begin participating in land stewardship, because we can’t advocate for landscapes and species — including our beloved #grasslands flora and fauna — we haven’t taken the time to get to know.

Through a sequence of guided exercises, we’ll explore ways of recording what we see without worrying about accuracy or perfection. The goal is not to make a “good drawing,” but to build the habit of looking more carefully — a practice you can take with you into your daily life.

No drawing experience is required. Feel free to bring your own drawing tools if you have favourites, otherwise materials will be available for everyone to use.
